The Dangers of Being Overweight
Obesity has become an epidemic in this country, affecting over one in three adults. About 17 percent of kids and teens—aged 2 through 19—are obese as well. Obesity puts individuals at risk for a wide variety of health problems, including stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Proper diet and exercise are excellent components of a healthy lifestyle, but these methods alone are not always effective for initial weight loss, at which point you can seek help from a bariatric surgeon.
Gastric banding is the most common weight loss procedure we perform at Beverly Hills Physicians. During gastric band surgery, a minimally invasive procedure, a surgeon will place an adjustable band around your stomach. The procedure is so minimally invasive that most patients return to regular activities almost immediately. The physical anatomy of your stomach is not permanently altered.
The gastric band separates your stomach into a small upper portion and a large lower portion. As you eat, your food enters the smaller stomach pocket. When that small pocket fills up, your stomach sends a signal to your brain saying that you’re full. The food then moves slowly to the lower, larger part of the stomach and proceeds through the rest of the digestive system. Digestion and absorption remain normal, but the slow movement and small stomach pouch result in you eating less food, getting full faster, and remaining full for longer stretches of time—all of this aids in weight loss.
The gastric band can be adjusted to increase or decrease the restriction around your stomach. As you lose weight, the band will need to be adjusted for comfort and effectiveness. A tighter band keeps food from moving as quickly to the rest of your digestive system, allowing you to remain full for longer periods.
