Gastric Bypass versus Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric bypass versus gastric sleeve surgery is a topic that often comes up between medical professionals and patients here at Beverly Hills Physicians. To understand how these procedures work and how they differ, it’s important to know why severely obese patients may need bariatric surgery in the first place.

We all know that severe obesity is bad for our health, happiness, and overall quality of life. However, as everyone who has ever struggled with their weight knows, permanently losing large amounts of weight is extremely difficult. That is because, as we begin to have some success losing weight, our bodies respond in a number of very unhelpful ways. That includes increasing the flow of hunger causing hormones in an effort to drive us to eat more and gain back the lost weight. While this might have been helpful in past eras when starvation was a constant menace, it’s anything but in a time and place where calories are all-too-easy to come by. Fortunately, advances in bariatric medicine now mean that we have proven tools at our disposal in the fight against obesity.

Two of the most commonly discussed procedures are the gastric bypass and the gastric sleeve, and new patients often wonder how the procedures differ and which might be better for them. Below is a brief rundown.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

The older of the two options discussed here, gastric bypass substantially removes almost all of the stomach -- except for a relatively tiny pouch. Moreover, as the name suggests, it also bypasses a portion of the digestive tract to reduce the number of calories a patient can absorb from food. As you can imagine, overeating loses its appeal as significant discomfort follows rapidly following overindulgence. In addition to the discomfort, a likely reduction in hunger hormones also may make it easier for patients to adjust to low calorie lifestyle.

While the gastric bypass has produced dramatic results for an enormous number of patients since the later decades of the 20th century, it is an undeniably radical procedure and there are some drawbacks. Dumping syndrome is the most notorious of the side-effects associated with the bypass. It may be an effective deterrent against overindulging, but it’s every bit as unpleasant as sounds. Another important issue is that, because patients effectively have a shorter digestive track after an operation, their ability to absorb nutrients, as well as calories, will be impaired. Certain foods will be permanently off the menu and patients will have to take supplements to ensure they are getting all the nutrients they need.

Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery

Sleeve gastrectomy surgery is a significantly less drastic procedure that has built up a very persuasive record of success. With a gastric sleeve procedure, the digestive tract remains mostly intact. The surgery consists of simply removing between 75 and 85 percent of the patient’s stomach and converting the remaining portion into a sleeve-like structure. This means that overeating will become uncomfortable, but patients digest their food normally and are allowed to eat most of the same foods they ate before, though in much smaller amounts. Best of all, it appears that the procedure’s increasingly well-documented hormonal benefit greatly reduces the urge to overeat in the first place, getting to the very root of obesity by attacking the bodily-driven excessive desire for food that makes substantial permanent weight loss so rare.

gastric balloon

Gastric Balloon

For those that want the fantastic results that come with a weight loss procedure, but are hesitant to have major surgery, patients now have the option of electing non-surgical, minimally invasive ORBERA™ balloon weight loss at Beverly Hills Physicians. The ORBERA Intragastric Balloon System uses a balloon that is first endoscopically inserted into the stomach through the mouth, then inflated once safely inside to help patients feel more full. This system is temporary, and is only intended to stay in the patient for six months, but has shown an extraordinary ability to help patients lose weight during that time.

Impressive Weight Loss Results

In a clinical trial cited in the FDA’s approval of the ORBERA balloon weight loss device, patients lost an average of 21.8 pounds, which constituted a 10 percent reduction in the patients’ starting body weight. More importantly, this is compared to the control group who only lost around 3 percent of their body weight with a guided diet and exercise plan. This means that patients who elect non-surgical balloon weight loss in Los Angeles will, on average, lose three times as much weight in a six month time span than if they were to try losing weight through diet and exercise alone.

This device is regarded as an extremely promising solution for those whose obesity is negatively impacting their health, but do not quite meet the BMI requirements for electing traditional bariatric surgery. For surgical procedures such as the gastric sleeve, patients typically need to have a BMI of 40 or above, or have a BMI of 35 or above in concert with several obesity related co-morbidities. The ORBERA system, however, is approved for patients with a BMI from 30-40, opening up a new weight loss opportunity for patients in need.

Minimally Invasive Weight Loss

weight loss scaleNon-surgical balloon weight loss in Los Angeles with Beverly Hills Physicians is minimally invasive, so patients can enjoy a recovery process that is significantly shorter than surgical alternatives. The procedure is performed in under an hour, and patients are typically discharged several hours later. Of course, like all types of weight loss surgery, patients will still need to follow a new, guided diet regimen to ensure that their balloon has the desired effect. Luckily, the balloon makes it much easier for patients to stick to a diet compared to their previous diet attempts before having the procedure.

Other Bariatric Surgery Options

While the gastric balloon can be extremely effective for a wide variety of patients, morbidly obese patients who need to lose a larger percentage of their body weight may want to talk to their doctor about other baritric procedures, namely the gastric sleeve.

Gastric Sleeve vs. Gastric Balloon

  • The gastric balloon is only intended to be temporary, and while it has proven to be very successful in helping patients lose weight during the six months that they have the balloon, other patients, especially those who need to lose over 100 pounds, need a more permanent solution. For this reason, the balloon is best for patients in the 30-40 BMI range, while patients with a BMI over 40 may be served best by the gastric sleeve.

For more information about the ORBERA system, or other types of bariatric surgery in Los Angeles, prospective patients can call Beverly Hills Physicians at 800-788-1416 to set up a free initial consultation. While all of the weight loss procedures offered by Beverly Hills Physicians have been proven effective, not every procedure is perfect for every patient, so it is important to have a conversation with one of our surgeons to ensure that you are getting to procedure that is right for you.

Lose Weight with Confidence

At Beverly Hills Physicians, we know that sometimes, you need help losing weight. Obesity is one of the leading causes of serious, life-limiting diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, and strokes. One in five Americans is obese or severely obese, but unfortunately, too many of these people have a hard time losing weight with just diet and exercise. Beverly Hills Physicians offers a full range of weight loss surgery options to help you reach a healthy weight, and look your best.

One of the most popular types of weight loss surgery is the gastric sleeve procedure. This weight loss surgery permanently reduces the size of the stomach, so you will feel full after eating less. This surgery has worked for numerous patients who need to lose weight for medical reasons, and Beverly Hills Physicians has a network of doctors and medical staff who are well-versed in the latest bariatric surgery techniques. Many gastric sleeve or Lap Band patients find that the procedure helps them rapidly lose weight, but that quick weight loss means they have uncomfortable excess skin. Once you’ve lost the weight, you can come back to our office and consult with a plastic surgeon for a tummy tuck to remove excess skin, and other treatments so your outer self glows as radiantly as your inner self.

Our skilled bariatric surgeons also perform Lap Band revision to gastric sleeve surgeries, for those who either suffered serious side effects from a poorly-performed Lap Band surgery, or who simply did not get the weight loss results they needed from the Lap Band. Contact us for a free consultation about our weight loss surgery options to help you get healthy today.

Non-Surgical Weight Loss

Non-Surgical Weight Loss

We offer a non-surgical weight loss option for patients who have a smaller weight loss goal in mind or those that are not appropriate candidates for Weight Loss surgery. Our non-surgical program is offered as two components that may be done separately but are most often done in combination.

How the Program Works:

Our program consists of two components:

    1. A weight loss/life coach develops a personalized plan for nutrition/meals and exercise advice. Weekly check ins and measurements are done and there is the option for prepared foods and nutrition supplements which can be dispensed during weekly visits.
    2. A doctor aids in medical management of your weight loss. Initial blood work is done to check your levels on key factors like liver enzymes, cholesterol and thyroid. Based on the blood results and your history you will then be prescribed appropriate medications to aid in your weight loss. Weekly injections of vitamins and lipotropic co-enzymes and amino acids will be given by medical staff to increase metabolism, stamina and to burn fat.

Weight Loss Balloon - A Non-Surgical Bariatric Alternative

In addition to our personalized program, another option for those that need to lose weight but don't want to go under the knife is the Orbera Weight Loss Balloon. While the procedure does involve placing a small balloon device in the patient's stomach, it is inserted endoscopically through the mouth, so the procedure can be accomplished without a single incision. In a clinical trial of the weight loss balloon, patients lost an average of 21.8 pounds over a 6 month period. While this amount of weight loss may not be sufficient for those who are morbidly obese and need to lose weight rapidly for their health, it is often a perfect option for those in the 30-40 BMI range who want to lose a smaller amount of weight with a reliable method.
