If you are considering plastic or cosmetic surgery, take our 4 step quiz:

Silicone Breast Implants

Beverly Hills Physicians is a group of board-certified specialists and surgeons with over 100 years of combined experience. Our personalized care and attention starts right from the beginning during your free consultation. We perform many different cosmetic procedures, but breast augmentation is one of the most common. Our patients choose from saline, silicone, or cohesive silicone (“gummy bear”) breast implants. Let’s take a look at silicone implants.

About Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone is the preferred filler for a majority of patients. While all implants consist of an elastomer silicone shell, silicone breast implants are filled with a viscous silicone gel. Silicone gel has the same consistency and texture as human fat, making it a suitable choice for breast implant surgery.

Most silicone implants have at least 3 shell layers surrounding the gel to create a safe, leak-free implant. The extra layers of silicone shell can make the implant feel slightly firmer than other implants, but silicone implants still have a natural feel that many patients prefer. During your consultations, your surgeon will help you determine which type is best for you.

Gummy Bear Implants

A recent variation of the silicone implant is the gummy bear implant. Gummy bear implants, which are more technically known as cohesive breast implants, are composed of a high-strength silicone gel that is designed to retain its shape and form even without the shell, which is advantageous in the event of a rupture or leak. The shape retention decreases the risk of rupture and capsular contracture and reduces wrinkling and ripples.

Cohesive breast implants are also much firmer, contributing to a more natural breast shape. Cohesive breast implants are well-suited for patients seeking revision surgery as the breast pocket can already accommodate the new implant.

The Procedure

Because silicone breast implants come prefilled, the surgeon makes a slightly longer incision than with saline implants.

The surgeon makes the incision under the arms or breasts or around the nipples based on your body and the size of the implant. From there, he places the breast implant into a pocket below or above the chest muscle and closes the incision.

The surgery does require some down time, and your surgeon will help you prepare a post-op routine to ensure a quick recovery and healing process.

Beverly Hills Physicians is home to a group of skilled and experienced healthcare providers. We have consultants on hand to help you decide whether silicone implants are right for you and guide you through every step of the process, from pre-op preparation to post-op care. If you have any questions about silicone implants or the breast augmentation procedure in general, please don’t hesitate to contact Beverly Hills Physicians today.
