Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is typically performed to set prominent ears closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. In some cases, however, it may also correct notable deformities. Otoplasty is different than many other plastic surgeries in that it’s actually about trying to attract less negative attention, rather than attracting more positive attention. Although sometimes adults who feel that their ears are overly prominent may look into the procedure, it is most often obtained for younger patients who may be concerned about excessive teasing or bullying.

What You Should Know About Otoplasty

Procedures are often performed on children between the ages of four and 14.

Surgery on children is safe because the ears are nearly fully grown by age four. Many parents reason that the earlier the surgery is performed, the less teasing and ridicule the child will have to endure.

Most surgeons recommend that parents stay alert to their child's feelings about protruding ears; parents should never insist on the surgery unless the child wants the changes. Children who want the surgery are generally more cooperative during the process and happier with the outcome.

When ear surgery is performed by a qualified, experienced surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor.

As with any operation, however, there are risks associated with surgery and specific complications associated with this procedure. These can include minor blood clotting and infections which can nearly always be effectively treated with antibiotics or, in rarer cases, follow-up surgeries.

The Otoplasty Process

In the initial meeting, your surgeon will evaluate the prospective patient’s condition. The physician will take a close look at the overall situation to make sure the patient is an appropriate candidate for a procedure, and will then suggest a course of action. If a procedure is indicated, the physician will provide specific instructions on how to prepare for the surgery.
