Why did you decide to have Weight Loss Surgery?

Lynn: I had been struggling with my weight my entire life and I had come to the point where I felt as if I was losing the battle. Every diet had failed and I would lose weight only to gain back what I lost and more. When I stepped on the scale right before my 50th birthday the number staring back at me was the heaviest I have ever been… And I felt scared and hopeless. My husband and I both needed to get healthy. We had thought about weight loss surgery before, but never really pursued finding out any options. But a few days after my scale revelation, I was reading the paper and saw an article about a doctor and her patient’s success with weight loss surgery. That doctor was Dr. Misra… and that article was the first step in getting control of our lives. We made an appointment to find out more about what was available. Meeting Dr. Misra was unlike anything I really expected. Most doctors made me feel ashamed about my weight. She made me feel like there was hope and that finally I could, in fact, be a healthy weight. I was so afraid of failing and I remember her saying that I wouldn’t because she would be there each step of the way. I really believe that she wants me to be healthy as much as I do!

Bang: I was the heaviest I have ever been and it was really starting to cause medical issues for me, although at the time I was just starting to become aware of the problems. I had dieted before with little success and had talked with Lynn about weight loss surgery as an option for us. When she made the appointment for the consultation, we had decided to do it together so we could make the lifestyle change for both of us. Dr. Misra told us our options and we decided on the gastric sleeve.

Why did you choose Beverly Hills Physicians?

Lynn: We did a lot of research before our initial consult. I was scared of surgery and quite honestly I was afraid of losing the weight and regaining it. But after meeting with staff and going through the consultation, I knew we were in the right place. They explained everything and answered all of our questions. We were not on this journey alone anymore, I feel like we have the whole team at Beverly Hills Physicians supporting us. I would, and do, highly recommend Beverly Hills Physicians.

Bang: They gave us a lot of information about what to expect before and after the surgery. My wife and I both felt comfortable with how our aftercare would be. It was an important to us that once we had the surgery we still had checkups with our doctor and that any questions that came up we had someone that could help us.

What has surprised you the most?

Lynn: That is a tough question. I have had so many surprises in these past 10 months. When you start this process it is hard to imagine the changes you will go through emotionally and physically. The surgery is a tool that helps you get your weight under control, but it will change you in ways you cannot believe. The first time I went shopping and bought a regular size I sat in the dressing room and cried. I am actively living my life now, doing things I used to just think about. All of my medical issues are gone and I am off all medications. I eat to live now, as corny as it sounds, not live to eat.

Bang: I was surprised at how quickly my medical issues started to get better after the surgery. My blood sugar levels and my blood pressure were both highly elevated and both issues are gone now. My eyes had retinal bleeding that has stopped and healed as well. I have more energy and my sleep apnea is completely gone.

What are you most looking forward to now?

Lynn: I’m looking forward to living each day because I have been given this chance to be healthy and all the tools I need to make it happen. When you are overweight it’s hard to think about your future because deep inside you know health issues are going to arise. Heart disease and high blood pressure run in my family, so I know I needed to lose the weight and keep it off once and for all.

Bang: I am looking forward to reaching my goal weight and continuing on this healthy path.

Anything else you want to share…

Lynn: I just want to say that for anyone thinking about WLS take the time to get educated so that you know what is going to happen and what you can expect, and most importantly what is expected of you. It is not “taking the easy way out” to decide to have WLS… You are getting a tool to help you reach your goals. Don’t be afraid to succeed. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.

Bang: Be committed to yourself when you have the WLS. Know what you are giving up in order to regain your life and your health.
