Increasing Popularity of Facial Rejuvenation Among Men

More men are obtaining both facial plastic surgeries and injectable-based procedures such as Botox and facial fillers, according to a recent article on New Jersey Monthly. While the author of the article adds that men may be more likely to try to keep procedures a secret, the article jibes with the consistently increasing number of men we’re seeing in our offices here at BHP. There are actually a number of reasons why more men are taking advantage of facial rejuvenation procedures.  Specifically:

Increasing Options – The first modern facelift was actually performed in 1901, but clearly the procedure has grown increasingly safe and effective in the 115 years since. While facelifts remain one of the gold standard procedures for long term facial rejuvenation, male and female patients alike may prefer to avoid or put off a surgery and explore the increasing number of injectables that many patients rely on. The most widely publicized of these, when obtained by men, has even acquired its own nickname in popular culture, i.e., “Brotox.” Still, Botox is just one non-surgical facial rejuvenation option; facial fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane are also popular options at our offices.

Staying Competitive in the Job Market – Once upon a time, it was mostly male performers who worried that an aging appearance could impact their careers but, increasingly, age discrimination is perceived as a problem for both women and men in just about every field. Male professionals often come to us with stories of formerly enthusiastic prospective employers who seem to lose all interest in a job prospect once they see their aging appearance at an in-person interview. Alongside facelifts for men and injectables, procedures such as eyelid lifts and even rhinoplasty (nose jobs), can also subtly help men and women alike take years off their appearance and improve their value in a hypercompetitive job market.

Social Change – Since the rise of the Women’s Movement in the 1970s, one consequence is that, as women have risen to increased status in society, men’s options in both their personal and career lives have opened up in ways that prior generations might have had a hard time imagining. This includes an increasing number of men who are paying attention to their personal appearance in ways that would have been hard to imagine in prior generations. In today’s world, it’s not just so-called metrosexuals who think seriously about improving their facial appearance with a facelift or injectables. Indeed, as more and more women contemplate improving their beach body appearance with plastic surgery, more and more men are taking a serious look at procedures ranging from liposuction to tummy tucks to improve their appearance from head to toe.
