3 Ways to Stay Active During the Holidays

For many people, the holidays are a season of good – or maybe just fattening – food and drink to go with the cool weather. The combination of celebrating the end of the year with social gatherings and delicious delights in addition to cooling temperatures often means a few extra pounds and less exercise. Whether you’re contemplating making serious changes in your life – such as with a weight loss procedure – or you’re just looking to keep your weight down this winter or just keep on looking your best, your body will be sure to thank you for staying active throughout the holidays. Here are three creative ways to burn some extra calories this season, all from the comfort of your home.

  1. Get up and move during TV commercials. Take advantage of boring commercials and use them as an opportunity to painlessly work some exercise into your schedule. Create your own workout by mixing and matching different exercises for every break. Whether it’s jumping jacks, crunches, lunges, or squats, you’ll have a full workout completed by the end of the episode.
  2. Clean or organize your home. This is perfect if you’re hosting friends or family during the holidays. Take a couple of days each week to focus on each room and burn some calories in the process. Decluttering and vacuuming will not only keep you active but will leave you with a re-freshed home, ready for the new year.
  3. Follow a fun fitness YouTube tutorial. If getting a gym membership just isn’t for you, there are scads of fitness tutorials available on the internet. A fun way to get your exercise in is by following a short workout video of your choice. From yoga to high-intensity training to Zumba videos, the options online are endless.
