What is a Tummy Tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery, which is more technically known as an abdominoplasty, is a popular cosmetic procedure in which a surgeon removes the excess fat, skin (including stretch marks), and tissue from the middle to lower abdomen. The surgeon will then tighten the muscles in the abdominal wall to create a flat and well-toned stomach. Tummy tucks work best on men and women who are in relatively good shape but have loose skin or large fat deposits in the abdominal area.

Who Should Get a Tummy Tuck?

Tummy tucks are popular among men and women who have recently lost a significant amount of weight. A woman who was recently pregnant, for instance, may find that the skin and muscles in her abdomen are stretched and sagging. This can be physically uncomfortable and a detriment to self-esteem and confidence.

How is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

Tummy tucks are primarily performed alone but can be used in conjunction with liposuction depending on your desired results and what your plastic surgeon recommends. Tummy tuck surgery narrows the waist but not the hips, which can potentially lead to an unbalanced look. Liposuction can improve the contour of a patient’s hips, flanks, and thighs to retain balance.

An outpatient procedure, abdominoplasty comes in two forms: full and partial. A full tummy tuck tightens the entire abdominal wall; a partial abdominoplasty, also known as a mini tummy tuck, mainly targets the lower abdomen and requires smaller incisions. Our consultants can help you decide whether a full or mini tuck is best for you.

Post-Op Care

Patients return to everyday activities two to four weeks after the surgery. Beverly Hills Physicians has several experienced nutritionists on hand to guide you through post-operative care and provide you with a healthy diet and exercise regimen to ensure your health and long-lasting results.
