How to Get Rid of Tired Eyes

Eyes are the window into the soul and are often the first things people will notice. As such, eyes can greatly affect how people perceive you. Nothing can make you look older than eyes that look excessively tired.

Regardless of how much sleep we regularly get, chances are we have all suffered from puffy eyes, dark circles, and other signs of tired eyes at some point in our lives. Whether you are having extended study sessions cramming for that final exam, partying until sunrise, or comforting a restless baby throughout the night, your eyes are easily affected by fatigue and exhaustion.

However, in some rare cases, tired eyes are hereditary and cannot be entirely helped or cured through conventional means.

Here are a few tips and ideas, both surgical and non-surgical, for getting rid of those tired eyes.

Cosmetic Surgery

In some cases the symptoms of tired eyes are much too severe for conventional methods, at which point you may want to consider surgical procedures. Just remember to consult your doctor or physician before going through with any medical procedures.

  • Blepharoplasty: Eyelid surgery, which is technically known as blepharoplasty, is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries in the nation. The surgery has a number of uses outside of curing tired eyes. In general, the blepharoplasty procedure removes fat, along with excess skin and muscle, from the upper and lower eyelids.

Eyelid surgery can successfully correct drooping upper eyelids as well as puffy bags below the eyes. The procedure may not completely cure dark circles and crow’s feet, but blepharoplasty is a great first step to treating those tired eyes.

  • Laser therapy: In conjunction with eyelid surgery, laser therapy can successfully correct signs of tired eyes. Lasers are used in certain cosmetic techniques to stimulate the deep layers of collagen in the skin, thus rejuvenating the skin’s surface to remove dark circles. Laser therapy can also successfully smooth wrinkles, improving the texture of the skin around your eyes.

  • Botox: Botox has become a very popular form of cosmetic surgery recently and has been used to treat wrinkles all over the face. When applied to areas around the eyes, Botox can easily get rid of crow’s feet and wrinkles, tightening skin to give you a younger look.

As you can see, there are several surgical procedures out there that can rejuvenate those perpetually tired eyes.

Home Remedies

Surgery is an effective remedy for tired eyes but there are some things you can do at home to help relieve exhausted eyes as well.

  • Cucumber slices: This might be one of the most cliché solutions but is also one of the most effective. Laying cold cucumber slices over your eyes will cool and refresh your eyes, decreasing puffiness and reducing dark circles and discoloration. If you don’t have a cucumber on hand, white potato slices and cooled tea bags are also effective.

  • Cold spoons: Leave two metal teaspoons in the freezer overnight. In the morning, take them out and press them lightly over your eyes. The cold metal will reduce any puffiness under the eyes almost instantly.

  • Milk: Soak two cotton balls in some ice cold milk and apply them to your eyes. The milk should effectively soothe and relax the skin around your eyes.

  • Over-the-counter moisturizers: In many cases, tired eyes are caused by dehydrated skin. Try applying a moisturizer to your eyes before you go to sleep to wake up to smooth, non-puffy eyes.

Lifestyle

Making tweaks to your lifestyle can effectively keep your eyes from looking tired all the time.

As any health professional will tell you, what you put into your body has a dramatic effect on the way your body appears. Drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated. Try not to spend too much time exposed to the sun and wear sunglasses when necessary. Eat food rich in vitamin A, which includes:

  • Fruits
  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Carrots
  • Egg yolks
  • Butter

Above all else, get a good night’s rest. On average, you should sleep about 7-9 hours a night. Your body needs to recharge and heal damaged skin. A combination of rejuvenating cosmetic procedures, easy home remedies, and a healthy lifestyle is the best way to combat tired eyes.
